Oral Cancer: Don’t Miss The Signs

Dentist procedure Johns Creek, GA

Each year doctors report millions of medical cases that were caught late because patients failed to recognize early signs and symptoms. With so many allergies, intolerances, conditions, and diseases identified, it is often hard for people to keep up with what ails them – and if the symptoms that they experience are even “real.” It is unfortunate that we live in a world where illnesses are so prevalent, but by being able to identify any concerning symptoms early, people are giving themselves a greater chance at overcoming anything.

Your dentist does much more than simply clean your teeth. Whether you know it or not, through regular dental visits, your dentist can save your life. Many life-threatening conditions and diseases first show signs inside the mouth. If you are not aware of certain signs, or simply do not attribute them to a serious concern, you could cause great risk to your health.

Oral cancer has an exceptionally high death rate among those diagnosed within five years. Aside from tobacco use and the damage that it causes, the reason oral cancer is so deadly is that many people miss signs that indicate the first stages of the disease. As with all types of cancer and other diseases, catching a condition early allows for a greater chance for successful intervention.

Signs of oral cancer include:

  • A persistent sore in the mouth or on the lips that will not heal
  • Any type of lump, bump, or growth in or around the oral area
  • A persistent sore throat
  • Chronic hoarseness or a change in the sound of your voice
  • The feeling that something is “caught” in the back of your throat
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Bad breath
  • A difference in how your teeth or dentures are fitting inside the mouth
  • Soreness or stiffness in the jaw
  • Ear pain
  • Dramatic weight loss

Some of the signs are obvious (e.g. a growth inside the mouth), yet signs such as a sore throat or ear pain are often not attributed to oral cancer. Keeping regular dental visits keeps you healthy. Contact Muccioli Dental today to schedule your next appointment.
