Getting a root canal might sound intimidating, but it’s a common procedure that can save your tooth and relieve pain. At Muccioli Dental in Johns Creek, we’re here to ensure you have all the information you need for a smooth recovery. Knowing what to expect after your root canal can help you feel more at ease and recognize if something needs attention. Here’s a guide on what’s normal and what’s not after your root canal.
What to Expect Right After Your Root Canal
- Numbness – It’s completely normal to feel numbness in your mouth for a few hours after the procedure due to the local anesthesia. This numbness will gradually wear off, so be careful not to bite your tongue or cheek while you’re still numb.
- Mild Discomfort – As the anesthesia wears off, you might experience some mild discomfort or soreness around the treated area. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage this discomfort.
- Sensitivity – Your tooth might be sensitive to pressure, especially when chewing. This sensitivity should decrease over time as the inflammation from the procedure subsides.
- Swelling – You might notice some slight swelling around the treated area. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek can help reduce swelling and provide some relief.
What’s Normal During Recovery
- Tenderness – It’s normal for the area around your treated tooth to feel tender for a few days. Avoid chewing on the treated side until the tenderness goes away to prevent any additional discomfort.
- Gum Soreness – The gums around the treated tooth may be sore. This can be managed with gentle brushing and rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.
- Temporary Filling – If you received a temporary filling, it’s normal for it to feel slightly different from your natural teeth. Just be gentle with it until your follow-up appointment when the permanent restoration is placed.
What’s Not Normal: When to Call Muccioli Dental
While mild discomfort and sensitivity are typical, certain symptoms are not and should prompt a call to our office:
- Severe Pain – Severe or worsening pain that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter pain relievers could indicate a problem, such as an infection or an issue with the root canal. If you’re experiencing intense pain, give us a call right away.
- Excessive Swelling – While slight swelling is normal, excessive swelling that doesn’t go down or gets worse, especially if accompanied by fever or chills, can be a sign of infection. This needs prompt attention.
- Persistent Numbness – If numbness persists for more than a few hours after the procedure, it could indicate nerve damage. Please contact our office if you experience prolonged numbness.
- Visible Discharge or Pus – Any discharge, pus, or a foul taste in your mouth is a sign of infection and needs immediate dental care. This could mean the infection is spreading and requires antibiotics or further treatment.
- Loose Temporary Filling – If your temporary filling becomes loose or falls out, it’s important to get it replaced as soon as possible to protect the treated area from bacteria and further damage.
Tips for a Smooth Recovery
To ensure a smooth recovery after your root canal, follow these tips:
