Despite what we’ve been told about a healthy and balanced diet, many of us fall short in getting the nutrients and vitamins our bodies need for optimal health. Your dental health is no different. In fact, your teeth and gums require a certain set of vitamins to stay strong, ward off decay and fight gum disease.
If you find your diet lacking, consider adding supplements or specific food selections with the following vitamins that are known to promote a healthier mouth:
Calcium – An essential nutrient for strong bones and teeth. The teeth and jaw bone are both primarily made out of calcium, and a calcium deficiency can contribute to jaw bone deterioration and even tooth loss.
Vitamin D – This vitamin has gained a lot of attention recently for his powerful benefits in women’s health. However, this vitamin is also important to your dental health. Without Vitamin D, your body can’t absorb the proper amounts of calcium it needs for strong bones and teeth. If you suffer from a dry mouth, metallic taste or burning sensation in your mouth, you may need more Vitamin D.
Vitamin A – The mucous membrane that surrounds and protects the gum tissues is maintained by Vitamin A. Vitamin A protects the health of your gums as well as aids in healing when these soft tissues get infected or damaged.
Vitamin B – The B vitamins play a role in the overall health of the mouth. When you are not getting enough of this vitamin, you are likely to experience the warning signs in your mouth. Receding gums, oral sensitivity and frequent toothaches have been linked a Vitamin B deficiency.
Vitamin C – We all know the immune-boosting powers of Vitamin C, which undoubtedly serve an important role inside your mouth. Proper amounts of daily Vitamin C can help fight harmful bacteria and infections within your teeth and gums.
At Muccioli Dental, we value the importance of educating patients about how their diet affects their oral health. What you eat (or don’t eat) can go a long way towards the health of your smile. If you suspect that your Vitamin deficiency has led to oral health problems, please schedule a visit with us today.
